Apical extrusion of calcium hydroxide
Doctor, some long-serving dentists reportedly deliberately extrude calcium hydroxide beyond the apex. Is there a logical explanation for this?
Translated version of the Turkish original
CaOH2 has the ability to break down tissues, and serious complications can develop when it is extruded beyond the apex. For this reason, it must definitely be avoided. In some teeth with large lesions, there may be no problem despite extrusion, but this does not mean that there will be no problem in every case. There may be no problem with already necrotic tissues in the area of extrusion, but because it is uncertain whether it will extend into vital tissues, there is no need to take the risk. Calcium hydroxide extrusion is equivalent to hypochlorite extrusion; for this reason, we definitely do not recommend extrusion.
